For most of my life, I wanted to be an architect
After many years of study, I qualified and worked in practice for a decade.
Architecture helped me travel the world, and I was fortunate enough to work in London, Kuala Lumpur and finally Singapore. I designed schools, shopping malls, skyscrapers, and MRT stations.
But each time I moved countries, it felt like starting over. A new industry, new regulations, new clients and connections. Meanwhile, my interests were also moving away from architecture.
There was a clash between my work and how I wanted to live.
During the pandemic, that way of life ended
Finding myself out of work was a chance to consider whether I wanted to continue with architecture. I set a timeline to explore other careers more compatible with remote working.
One of these careers was audiobook narration. This quickly widened to voiceover... and then voice acting as a whole.
I studied voiceover extensively at the City Lit, London and realised I loved the variety, immediacy and creativity of the work.
Importantly, I found that clients were willing to pay me for it!
In 2021, I launched Voices by Andrew
It's a brand I can take with me wherever I go in the world. I can retain client and colleague relationships, accumulate lasting knowledge, and make longer term plans.
Currently, I'm based in Singapore, allowing me to cater to all major timezones. Similarly, I can continue to study with online coaches from all around the world to increase my range and expertise.
Outside of the booth I perform improv on stage, edit podcasts, and provide live directed sessions to other voice talent.
