For most of my life, I'd wanted to be an architect
After many years of study, I qualified and worked in practice for a decade.
Architecture helped me travel the world. I was fortunate enough to live in London, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, designing schools, shopping malls, skyscrapers, and MRT stations.
But each time I moved countries, it felt like starting over. A new industry, new regulations, new clients and connections.
There was a clash between my work and how I wanted to live.
During the pandemic, that way of life ended
Finding myself out of work was a chance to consider whether I wanted to continue with architecture.
I gave myself six months to explore other careers, less tied to a particular location.
One of these careers was audiobook narration. This quickly widened to voice acting as a whole.
I studied voiceover extensively at the City Lit, London and realised I loved the variety, immediacy and creativity of the work.
To my surprise, I found that clients were willing to pay me for it!
In 2021, I launched Voices by Andrew
It's a brand I can take with me wherever I go in the world. I can retain client and colleague relationships, accumulate lasting knowledge, and make longer term plans.
I've recently relocated back to my native UK, only this time it didn't feel like starting over.
I've continued to offer the same level of service to my growing list of clients, continued to study with online coaches, and maintained supportive relationships with my voice acting colleagues all over the world.
